Shooter sentenced to 26 years

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

On October 10, Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter announced that Paul Quiroz was sentenced to 26 years in prison for a December 3, 2005 shooting in Whiting.

Quiroz, 33, pled guilty to two counts of Aggravated Battery (Class B Felony) in the shooting of two Whiting men during an altercation at a local tavern. The victims sustained damage to their abdomens and limbs.

Deputy Prosecutor Mark Watson noted that these injuries were "serious and have impacted their lives...with all the shots fired, someone could have been killed." Quiroz had eight prior felony convictions. Judge Salvador Vazquez, in sentencing Quiroz, told him that a tough childhood was no justification for a life of crime.

Carter commended Whiting Police Chief Steve Miller, Det. Sam Abner, Det. John Sotello and Sgt. John Sopo for their successful investigation of the case.
