Possible Burglary Averted

On January 7, a resident in the 1800 block of Cleveland reported that a male subject in a gray jacket was attempting to break into the rear of his residence. Officers reported that the subject broke the rear gate of the yard while the resident was shoveling snow. Officers reported that the subject ran toward Central Avenue. They followed footprints in the snow, but eventually lost them in a more highly trafficked area. No one gained entry to the residence.


Garbage Can Fire

On January 5, Officers and Fire Department detailed to 1800 block alley between Cleveland and Atchison to a report of a trash can on fire.

Sgt. Adams, after clearing the fire call, indicated that he was in pursuit of a white male subject wearing a black jacket and riding a bike near the area. Hammond Police located the individual in the 1600 block of Indianapolis Blvd. Investigation ongoing.

On 5 January, the Fire Department was dispatched to a garbage can fire in the 1500 block of Fred Street. The fire was extinguished.


Possible Scam

On January 5, Amoco Refinery Credit Union reported that numerous members had received calls from an unknown source. The pre-recorded message indicated that accounts may have been accessed without the member's permission, and proceeded to detail a way to check. This process included entering account number information.

Investigation ongoing.




Garbage Can Fires

On January 5, Officers and Fire Department responded reports of burning garbage can in the rear of the 1500 and 1600 blocks of Cleveland Ave. The fires were extinguished by WFD, Officers checked the area with negative results.


Possible Fraud

On January 2, a resident in the 1500 block of 119th reported a possible fraud. The resident reported that she received a call from a Jamaican resident reporting that she had won $150,000. The subject advised the local resident to provide a $150 fee to claim the prize. The resident called the PD to advise of a possible scam.


Garbage Can Fires

On January 2, Sgt. Tobias reported numerous garbage cans on fire in the 1500 block between Central and Cleveland. No suspect was found in the area. The Fire Department was detailed to extinguish the fires.


Possible Identity Theft

On December 31, a resident reported a possible identity theft. Chase Bank notified him that a person unknown opened a Discover credit card in his name and attempted to remove $1,000 from the ATM. The suspect removed only the $500 limit. Investigation ongoing.


Burlglary 1500 Block Fischrupp

On December 31, Officers investigated a burglary in the 1500 block of Fischrupp. The resident reported that persons unknown broke oopen the front door of his apartment and stole several items.


Car Windows Broken

On December 30, residents of the 1800 block of LaPorte reported that car windows had been broken out of a 1998 Ford and a 2005 Volvo.


Car Broken Into
Tuesday, January 6, 2009

On December 30, a resident in the 1800 block of LaPorte reported that her 1995 Dodge Neon was broken into and the stereo taken. Resident reported that a male friend observed a male subject wearing a dark hoodie outside the car and yelled at him. The suspect dropped the radio and ran.


Car Window Broken

On December 27, a resident of the 1400 block of 121st reported that a window was broken on her 2005 GMC Yukon. Officers reported that the rear window was shattered, but that nothing was taken from the vehicle.


Tires Flattened

On Dacember 27, a resident reported that all four tires on her 1990 Gray Mercury were flattened during the night. The resident reported that she has had an ongoing feud with her neighbor and that this was not the first time the tire flattening has occurred.


Burglary 1500 Block Fischrupp

On December 25, Officers investigated a burglary in the 1500 block of Fischrupp. A resident reported that they came home to discover a screen door damaged and a front porch window broken. Entry was gained through a bedroom window. A Cannon power shot camera and tray of coins were taken.




Theft Reported
Tuesday, January 6, 2009

On December 23, Officers investigated a theft from a residence in the 1700 block of Cleveland Avenue. Officers reported that the resident collects die-cast cars and noticed that a gas-powered piece was missing. No sign of forced entry was apprent. Officers reported that the resident's ex-girlfriend had recently moved out, but was still in posession of a key to the residence.




TN Man Caught
Tuesday, January 6, 2009

On December 20, a resident in the 1500 block of John requested Officers in reference to a case she had against a subject named Ronald Blood. The resident reported that Blood had escaped from the Meigs Co. Jail in Decatur, TN. Officers confirmed that he had escaped from the jail and would make more frequent patrols near her home. They advised her to call 911 immediately should he appear.

Whiting PD was contacted later by Meigs Co Sheriffs Department advising that Ronald Blood was captured and back in jail.




Juvenile Arrested
Tuesday, January 6, 2009

On December 20, officers arrested a juvenile in the 1800 block of Sheridan. The juvenile had an arrest warrant out of Iowa. Officers transported the juvenile to the PD to confirm the warrant. He was then transported to Lake County Juvenile Courts pending extradition to Iowa.
