Whiting Police Department Archives
Thursday, February 7, 2008 On Wednesday afternoon, an elderly man of the 1500 block of Cleveland was nearly the subject of a "Gypsy" scam. A Hispanic male subject wearing a stocking cap asked if he could shovel the driveway. The homeowner agreed and took the subject to the basement area of the house. At this point, a relative living in the rear of the house noticed three other male subjects attempting to enter the back of the home. He questioned these subjects and they fled in a dark Ford escape with temporary Indiana plates. Nothing was taken from the home. The Whiting Police Department would like all residents--especially the seniors on whom these scam artists prey--to be aware of the possibilities of these schemes. If a subject claims they are with a utility company, ask for ID and contact the company to verify. NEVER let them in the house. Contact police immediately if someone seems suspicious. |
