City Preps to Bid Standard Avenue & Front Street Renovations

Sunday, August 20, 2006

The Whiting Redevelopment Commission has approved the bond financing for the reconstruction of Standard Avenue from Front Street to the east City limits, for Front Street from 121st to 119th Street and for 121st Street from Schrage Avenue through the refinery to Standard Avenue.  The estimated cost of $8,500,000 will be funded through the sale of TIF (Tax Increment Financing) Revenue bonds and through a $1,300,000 federal grant.  The bonds will be paid back out of industrial property tax revenue and will not impact residential or commercial property tax rates.  This project which will include new water and sewer lines, will allow the City to develop nearly 60-acres of vacant industrial property along Standard Avenue.

Mayor Joe Stahura's Annual Blood Drive
Friday, August 11, 2006

The Mayor's blood drive will be held at the Community Center in the Social Room on Saturday, September 9th from 10AM to 3PM.

Heartland Blood Centers has partnered with the City of Whiting to enable the community to participate in this exceptionally rewarding program.  Blood donors are literally giving a living part of themselves to aid another person.  Please take advantage of this opportunity to realize the hero that lives in all of us.  Heartland's blood donations end up here in Northwest Indiana.

If you are considering donation, please call Kathy Kazmierski at 659-7704 ext. 232 to set up your appointment.  The donation process is 20 minutes and Heartland can accommodate 6 donors each 20 minute interval, so the process moves quickly.  All that is required at the donation appointment are ones ID and knowledge of personal medications for some screening questions.  This is your chance to make a difference and become a hero!  Mark your calendars.
