THE CITY OF WHITING IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER BP Plans $3 Billion Project to Refine More Canadian Heavy Crude Oil in the U.S. Midwest Wednesday, September 20, 2006 BP announced today that it has entered the final planning stage of a $3 billion investment in Canadian heavy crude oil processing at its Whiting Refinery. Reconfiguring the refinery also has the potential to increase its production of motor fuels by about 15%, which is about 1.7 million additional gallons of gasoline and diesel per day. Construction of the project is tentatively to begin in 2007 and be completed by 2011, pending regulatory approvals. "We appreciate BP's choice of Indiana for this massive, landmark project," said Governor Daniels. "In capital investment this is the largest we've had, and more construction workers will be hired for this project than to build the new Indiana Stadium and convention Center. The eyes of the whole state are on Northwest Indiana today, as they should be. This marks another huge step in Indiana's economic comeback. "Dan Sajkowski, BP Whiting Refinery Manager and Vice President of BP Products North America Inc., said the company's planned investment is expected to create jobs for approximately 2,500 workers during the peak of its three-year construction phase and 60 to 80 permanent full-time employees to operate enhanced processing units and other refinery improvements. Rain Storm - Flooding Update Thursday, September 14, 2006 Northwest Indiana experienced an extremely unusual period of heavy rainfall the week of September 10. While Whiting was not without incident, we fared much better than many of our neighboring communities. As of September 14, there were only handful of serious incidents reported. Mayor Stahura and his staff are currently reviewing each incident report to determine in the City can make further improvements to help alleviate future problems. Stahura said, " While we will never eliminate all sewer and drainage issues in our Community, we will continue to make improvements wherever possible." The Mayor encourages any resident that had experienced a problem related to the recent rains to call City Hall to report the incident. Mayor to hold "Ask the Mayor" Night on October 25 at 7:00 Thursday, September 14, 2006 Mayor Joe Stahura will hold a community meeting on Wednesday, October 25 at 7:00 PM in the Community Center Social Room. Qualified applicants can receive up to $2000 in property tax relief in 2006. If funds remain available at the end of this year's program, the program will be extended for 2007. The program is voluntary and all businesses wishing to apply must do so by the October 31 deadline. Liberty Savings Bank, FSB has agreed to act as the application submission site. This program has been created to provide temporary relief to businesses and business property owners who were negatively impacted by property tax reassessment. Until this program, businesses and commercial property owners have not been eligible for any of the property tax relief programs because they are tied to the state Homestead Credit. This is believed to be the only business property tax relief program provided in the state. For additional information, please review the application (link provided below).
