Congratulations City of Whiting 2020 Scholarship Winners

Mayor Joseph M. Stahura and the members of the Whiting Common Council are pleased and proud to announce the winners of the Twelfth Annual City of Whiting Scholarship Program.

Three regular scholarships were awarded this year. Angelica Jovceski and Olivia Olson were the recipients from Whiting High School and Abbey Haynes was the recipient from Morgan Park Academy.

The plaques will be presented to the winners at a common council meeting later this summer.

The scholarship program was developed by the Mayor and the Common Council in 2008 to reward students of Whiting homeowners.  The scholarship emphasizes academics, school leadership and community activities. The award has been funded by contributions from the City of Whiting, the Whiting Redevelopment Commission, the Whiting/Robertsdale Community Improvement Corporation. The BP Whiting Refinery continues to make annual contributions and has served as a strong supporter of the program since its inception. BP is particularly interested in those students who major in math, science, engineering or technology as they could become future members of the BP workforce.

Mayor Stahura remarked, “The elected officials of the City are honored to assist and reward these graduates for their participation and leadership in school and community events. They demonstrate the quality and talent of our city’s youth.”

BP Whiting Refinery Manager Dave Kurt added “BP is pleased to partner with the City of Whiting to offer these scholarships. We extend our congratulations to Abbey, Angelica and Olivia whose discipline and dedication to excellence are an inspiration to all. Students are our future leaders and Indiana’s greatest resource. Best wishes to each and every student as you pursue your educational endeavors.”

The City of Whiting Scholarship award this year is $25,000 award which disburses $6,250 each August for four consecutive years.  Winners continue award eligibility by attending college on a full-time basis and maintaining a 3.0 grade point average.

A selection committee reviewed the submitted applications and applied the selection criteria. “One of the most important pieces of the application is the student’s commitment to volunteering in the community.  This year’s winners demonstrated that commitment by dedicating numerous hours to assisting not only the city, but the Chamber of Commerce, local churches and organizations, and their neighbors.  Along with their academic excellence, they display the very spirit that is Whiting.  We congratulate all of them and know that they have a bright future ahead of them”, stated selection committee member Linda Gajewski of Calumet College of St. Joseph.

The winners were all top students and were involved in a variety of activities at school as well as in the community. Olivia plans on attending Purdue University West Lafayette to study animal science (pre-veterinary). Angelica will also attend Purdue University West Lafayette to major in mechanical engineering. Abbey has chosen Loyola University Chicago and will study environmental science.
