Household Battery Drop Off Program is Ending

The City of Whiting has received notice from the Lake County Solid Waste Management District (LCSWMD) that due to safety and liability issues, the Household Battery Drop Off Program is ending.  LCSWMD anticipates that ALL bins will be removed from all locations by the morning of Tuesday, April 16, 2024.  Residents are asked to bring their household batteries to a Household Hazardous Waste Collection event.

The Battery Program has been in place since 1996 with no issues. However, LCSWMD has recently had a small fire at one of their locations and decided to terminate collections. Lithium batteries pose several dangers and hazards when not properly managed.  In order to avoid a catastrophic event, it makes good sense to end this program immediately.
