June 11, 2024

Whiting, Indiana:  The Whiting Common Council adopted a pair of resolutions at its meeting on Tuesday June 4, 2024, recognizing the presidential declaration of June as National LGBTQI+ month and establishing a flag and banner policy for the City.

Resolution No. CC2024-07 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WHITING, INDIANA RECOGNIZING UNITED STATES PRESIDENTIAL PROCLAMATIONS DECLARING THE MONTH OF JUNE AS LGBTQI+ PRIDE MONTH passed unanimously. In the Resolution the Council encourages residents to promote unity, civility and tolerance in their daily lives. More importantly, the council expressly declared that “it is essential to acknowledge that the need for education and awareness remains vital in stopping prejudice, hate, and discrimination.” Council President Chris Sarvanidis stated “The action taken by the council tonight reflects its collective desire to acknowledge the full diversity of our City and nation.”

At the same meeting, the Council adopted Resolution No. CC-2024-06 A RESOLUTION APPROVING A POLICY FOR THE DISPLAY OF FLAGS AND BANNERS ON CITY-OWNED PROPERTY. This resolution was adopted by a 4 to 1 vote. The resolution basically codifies the long-standing policy of the City that the ONLY flags which will be displayed on city-owned properties will the United States of America Flag, the Indiana State Flag, the City of Whiting Flag, the POW/MIA Flag and the Tree City USA Flag. “Back in 1996 the City established Centennial Park and Commons as the primary location for flag displays in the City” remarked President Sarvanidis. “These are the only flags that we have traditionally flown in the City and our adopted policy via this resolution reflects that practice” he concluded. The same policy also addresses the hanging of banners in the city and limits those to general seasonal banners and banners for city sponsored events as authorized by the Board of Public Works and Safety.
