Whihala Beach/City of Whiting Summer 2019 Lifeguard and Open Water Rescue Job Openings
The City of Whiting is currently seeking a qualified Waterfront Supervisor/Head Lifeguard and qualified Lifeguards to patrol Whihala Beach for the 2019 Season!
Requirements and Experience
• Satisfactory completion of fitness/swim tests, be at least 17 years old, and possess American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR certifications before the season start date of May 24th
• 6 months of lifeguarding experience preferred (pool, lakefront, or other aquatic facility)
The Benefits
• You’ll gain valuable career experience, especially if you are planning on pursuing a career in the medical or first responder professions (you’ll improve and refine life/professional skills including verbal/nonverbal communication abilities, conflict management, leadership, teamwork, critical thinking, stress/pressure management, basic and open water surf rescue lifeguarding, and basic life support (BLS) skills)
• Extremely competitive pay ($10.25/hour for 1st year guards; raises to higher levels thereafter determined by experience and merit)
• Flexible scheduling +25-40 hours per week, weather dependent
• Additional certifications (within the first 2 weeks of employment, you will earn an American Red Cross Lifeguard Waterfront Certification – additionally, there may an opportunity for staff members to earn additional certifications pertaining to lifeguarding and other waterfront operations
What We Are Looking For
• Strong, highly proficient swimming skills and high overall fitness level
• Positive, respectful, mature, proactive personality with the ability to act professionally while on duty
• Independent decision-making abilities
• American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification
• Availability to work ample hours, including weekends and holidays in a sometimes very fast-paced environment
• Strong interest in learning and continued growth (part of our regular in-service training will involve sessions with various agencies including the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, the DNR, Lake County Marine Sheriff, local fire and police departments, the National Weather Service, and the GLSRP (Great Lakes Surf and Rescue Project).
