THE RAIN IS OVER, WHITING GIRLS SOFTBALL TEAM SHINES TO WIN STATE TITLE!

The Oilers (34-0) beat Tecumseh 3-0 to win the Class A Softball State Championship. The Oilers were the first undefeated champion in state history in 2006; and went undefeated this year to make history again. Victoria Franco won the Mental Attitude Award. The game, originally scheduled for Saturday, was postponed multiple times due to rain and lighting before it was picked up in the fifth inning on Tuesday. Pitcher Mel Dumezich struck out 16 and only allowed one hit. Sam Plavec led off the fifth inning with a double. Sarah Watkins bunted Plavec and the catcher threw the ball away which allowed Watkins to move to second. The Oilers had runners on second and third, Adi Cruz fly ball to right was dropped and Plavec scored. Watkins scored on a wild pitch. The game was suspended until Tuesday. When play resumed, Victoria Franco singled in Adi for the third run. In the bottom of seventh with runners on second and third and two outs, Mel struck out the last batter to end the game.
