July 3rd & 4th Events Postponed Until 2021
Thursday, April 9, 2020
It was with a heavy heart that Mayor Joe Stahura and the City of Whiting announced on Thursday, April 9th that the City’s July 3rd and 4th festivities are officially cancelled. This cancellation includes the annual July 3rd Party in the Park and Fireworks Show at Whiting Lakefront Park as well as Whiting’s 2020 July 4th Parade.
These commemorative events take an enormous amount of effort to stage, including executing contracts for the performers and parade entries many months in advance. With the uncertainty of how the Coronavirus Pandemic will be impacting the Region this July, cancelling the events now was necessary. While the City has a longstanding 4th of July tradition, the City has a larger responsibility to ensure the safety of our residents, the participants and the spectators.
This year would have been Whiting’s 101st consecutive 4th of July Parade in which 10’s of thousands of spectators were expected to line the parade route to celebrate. The July 3rd Party in the Park and epic Lakefront Fireworks Show also draws 1,000’s of people and is considered one of the Region’s best firework displays.
Mayor Stahura is confident that these memorable activities will be back in 2021 and that both events will be even more spectacular than in previous years. Mayor Stahura expresses, “While we look forward to attending these events each year, it’s extremely important that we all do our part to stay safe by being smart. We will all get through this together!”
