Whiting Lakefront Bids Farewell to Oiler High School Baseball
Monday, April 26, 2010
Like the adage say “All good things must come to an end.” This is true for the 72 year old tradition of Whiting High School Baseball being played at the Lakefront in Whiting Park. Whiting Park and its Lakefront will be undergoing a major facelift in the coming year and as part of that, the baseball field will be relocated to new “digs” on the south side of 119th Street. No longer will Region players being able to “put one in the lake” or worry about frostbite in late May. The Whiting High School Baseball Program has had great success in the past several years. 2008 saw the Oilers not only win the first baseball sectional in the school’s history, but also a regional win and a state final four appearance. 2009 brought a second sectional championship and 2010 started off promising with a preseason ranking of 5th in state in Class 1A and as of April 13th, 1 loss. May 22, 2010 will mark the last Whiting High School games to be played on that field, a double header against conference opponent Michigan City Marquette. It will be the 2010 Oiler Baseball team’s final farewell to a field that, as of recent years, has been the site of a burgeoning Oiler Program. The Whiting Baseball Bullpen Club (an adult booster club for Whiting Baseball) would like to give that opportunity to any Whiting High School Alumni Baseball Players. The Club is organizing an Alumni Baseball Players Softball game following the 2nd game of the double header. Any former Whiting High School Baseball player who would like to play on the field one last time is welcome. The cost is $25.00 to play, which includes a commemorative shirt and admittance to a post game gathering. We encourage everyone to come out and watch the 2010 Oilers play the final season at the Lakefront with the culmination on May 22, 2010 marking the end of an era.
